Arc System Works is bringing serious pedigree to the single-player side of MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that industry legend Kieron Gillen—known for his acclaimed run on Uncanny X-Men, Eternals, and DIE—is the lead writer behind the game’s campaign, titled Episode Mode.

Unlike standard fighting game stories that rely on dry arcade ladders or convoluted cinematic cutscenes, Gillen’s approach splits the narrative into five distinct stories. Each story focuses on one of the five base-game teams and is brought to life by a different comic artist, offering a stylized transition between high-octane 4v4 matches.

Narrative Structure and the Knights of Doom

Episode Mode is set to showcase the specific dynamics of the 20-character roster. Players will steer teams like the Unbreakable X-Men and the Fighting Avengers as they clash with the antagonist faction, the Knights of Doom. Having Gillen at the helm suggests a much tighter, comic-accurate tone than standard crossover fare.

Rather than a simple sequence of mirror matches, these team-focused campaigns will lead directly into high-stakes boss encounters. These encounters will test players’ mastery of the game’s core systems—from utilizing the shared team Vital Gauge to managing the Assemble Gauge for precise assists and tags.

New Bosses: The Promoter and The Champion of the Universe

Recent gameplay showcases have offered a first look at the game’s massive boss fights. Alongside the previously confirmed main antagonist, Champion of the Universe, a new threat has been revealed: The Promoter.

These boss battles are designed to break the rules of traditional neutral and pressure dynamics. Instead of fighting standard opponent configurations, players will have to deal with screen-filling attacks, custom bullet-hell patterns, and boss-specific phase changes. Surviving these trials will require careful conservation of the Skill Gauge to punish openings with powerful supers and EX moves.
