Sony Eases Marvel Tōkon Steam Region Lock in 15 Countries, But PSN Mandate Remains a Roadblock
Sony has removed 15 countries from the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Steam region block, yet over 100 regions remain locked out due to the mandatory PSN link.
Sony has quietly updated the Steam store settings for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, lifting purchase restrictions in approximately 15 countries. Steam users in regions such as the Philippines and Pakistan are reportedly now able to access the store page and pre-order the game.
This update follows intense criticism directed at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) for its publishing strategy on PC. The publisher’s mandate requiring a PlayStation Network (PSN) account link on Steam has effectively barred players in regions without native PSN support from purchasing the game.
Easing Efficacy or Too Little, Too Late?
The community’s response to the region update has been highly critical. The minor list adjustment does not change the fact that more than 100 countries remain locked out. When news of the initial PC lockout first broke, it highlighted how a mandatory account requirement could fragment the PC audience at launch.
In response, players initiated a massive community petition demanding the complete removal of the PSN requirement. For a fast-paced 4v4 tag fighter that relies heavily on a healthy matchmaking pool and seamless network execution, regional barriers pose a major problem. FGC organizers have raised concerns that such restrictions could harm the game’s competitive esports future by blocking talent pools in Latin America, Asia, and Eastern Europe.
Balancing Meter Under Pressure
For players in supported regions, the core focus remains on the upcoming open beta running from July 24 to July 26, 2026. This test will offer the first public hands-on opportunity to experience the game’s team-based dynamics on both PS5 and PC.
Unlike traditional 3v3 titles, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls features a 4v4 tag format where resource management is shared across the entire team. Success in neutral relies on balancing the following gauges:
- Vital Gauge: A single, shared health bar for the entire four-character squad.
- Assemble Gauge: Used to call assists and execute tag switches during combos or pressure sequences.
- Skill Gauge: The primary offensive meter used for EX specials and super moves.
Lobby systems and rollback netcode will face their first true stress test during the beta. Whether Sony will make further adjustments to store access before the August 6, 2026 release date remains to be seen.
